Silent Hill Townfall Beginner Guide

Updated 2026-09-20 · Category: Guide

ANSWER // DIRECT

Three things matter most before your first run of Silent Hill: Townfall. Avoid fights wherever you can — director Jon McKellan put it as "if you go in swinging, you're gonna have a bad time". Save at phone booths, because that is where manual saving happens. And respect the damage numbers: on normal difficulty two or three hits kill you. Combat difficulty (story, normal, nightmare) and puzzle difficulty (hinted or normal) are set separately, so you can make the fighting easier without giving up the puzzles.

Set your two difficulties separately

Combat has three levels: story, normal and nightmare. Puzzle difficulty is its own setting with two options, hinted or normal.

That split is the most useful setting in the game for a first run. You can drop combat to story to keep the atmosphere without dying constantly, and still leave puzzles unhinted if solving them yourself is why you are here.

There is no downside on the trophy side either: the full trophy list contains no difficulty-related trophies, so nothing is locked behind a harder setting.

Saving happens at phone booths

Manual saves are made at phone booths around St. Amelia. Autosaves fire on their own and flag themselves with the series' red square.

Get into the habit of routing past a booth after anything expensive — a solved puzzle, a cleared area, a hard-won pickup.

One warning for completionists: a gold trophy, Reject The Help, requires that after you meet Richard you never use a phone to save again. That directly conflicts with saving often, so decide which run is your careful run and which is your challenge run.

Fighting is the last resort

The developers are unusually direct about this. McKellan's line from the Fangoria preview is the whole beginner guide in one sentence: going in swinging goes badly.

The main enemies, nicknamed Axe Heads, are fast, and you cannot outrun them. Once you are spotted you are almost certainly taking damage.

Melee weapons wear out after a few encounters, and ammunition is scarce enough that every trigger pull is a decision, since gunfire draws more enemies.

Learn what the CRTV is telling you

The handheld CRTV replaces the series radio. It hums to signal a nearby enemy and gives you a direction, and it can show enemy positions through walls and fog.

You can keep watching through the static while hidden, which turns a closet into an observation post rather than a place to wait blindly.

Tuning also unlocks narrative logs and puzzle hints. On PS5 you tune with the controller gyro, so expect to physically tilt the pad while hunting a signal.

Your one safety net

At low health you can use an IV bag to survive a hit that would otherwise kill you. It is tied to Simon being a patient, and it functions as a single second chance.

Treat it as a real resource rather than a habit. Knowing it exists is what stops a panic retreat from turning into a reload.

Use noise deliberately

Enemy detection is sensitive, and previewers found it harsh at times. Plan the distraction before you break cover rather than improvising mid-sprint.

  • Throw a bottle or a brick to pull a patrol somewhere you are not
  • Switch on a radio or a television in the world as a longer-lasting distraction
  • Set off a car alarm when you need a patrol moved a long way
  • Hide in closets, sheds and half-open doors, and lean out before moving

If you are coming from the older games

This is first-person throughout, and the CRTV replaces the radio, so the muscle memory of a third-person Silent Hill does not transfer cleanly.

The other adjustment is pace. The early game is exploration-dense and deliberately slow, so measure progress in leads followed rather than ground covered.

Accessibility

The PlayStation Store listing counts 22 accessibility options, and the game is rated M. Worth a pass through that menu before the prologue rather than after it.

Ten mistakes that cost new players a run

  • Swinging first — the fastest way to lose health you cannot get back
  • Trying to outrun an Axe Head, which does not work
  • Firing a gun to solve a problem that silence would have solved
  • Burning a melee weapon on an enemy you could have walked past
  • Skipping documents, then hitting a lock whose code you walked past
  • Not sweeping with the CRTV before entering a room
  • Forgetting the IV bag exists and reloading a fight you could have survived
  • Saving at every phone booth while chasing Reject The Help
  • Leaving puzzle difficulty on normal when you only wanted the atmosphere
  • Treating bottles and bricks as damage rather than as tools for moving patrols

Your first hour, in order

Set both difficulties before the prologue, and take a pass through the 22 accessibility options while you are in the menus. Changing your mind later is possible, but starting comfortable is better.

The prologue hands you the CRTV in a bedroom. Spend a minute tuning it with nothing threatening you, because learning the hum and the gyro motion under pressure is much harder.

After you escape the Otherworld and reach the town square, the game opens up. Treat the first phone booth you find as a landmark, not just a save.

How resources actually work

Treat the whole game as one budget rather than a series of encounters with their own supply. Melee weapons degrade, ammunition is scarce, and neither replenishes on a schedule you control.

A trophy for creating 20 new items by combining others confirms a crafting system exists, so picked-up junk is worth carrying rather than ignoring. What combines with what has not been documented publicly yet.

Resource containers are their own collectible set with a trophy attached, which tells you they are scattered widely enough to be worth actively hunting rather than stumbling upon.

Reading the CRTV like a tool, not a gimmick

The hum is proximity plus direction. If it starts while you are mid-room, the correct response is to find cover and tune properly, not to sprint for the objective.

From inside a hiding place you can keep watching through the static. That turns waiting from a gamble into an observation, and it is the difference between leaving cover on a guess and leaving on information.

Tuning also produces puzzle hints and narrative logs, so a sweep in a quiet area pays you twice.

What the trophy list tells you about pacing

The list runs to 37 trophies: 1 platinum, 5 gold, 9 silver and 22 bronze. Its shape is informative even without play data.

Documents are the only collectible with a gold trophy, which points to them being numerous enough to represent real hours on their own.

Several bronze trophies are behavioural rather than progress-based — luring 20 enemies with bottles, staying hidden for 60 seconds, specific long-range headshots. Those are cheap in time but need deliberate setup.

Comparing the three figures honestly

A 10-14 hour first run and a sub-four-hour speedrun are not in conflict; they describe different knowledge states. Almost all of the difference is time spent not knowing where to go.

That gap also explains why the speedrun trophy is reasonable rather than punishing. By the time you attempt it you will have walked the route at least once.

For 100%, the honest answer is that no verified number exists. Anyone quoting a completionist figure before launch is extrapolating.

Silent Hill Townfall FAQ

Which difficulty should I start on?

Story or normal. There are no difficulty-related trophies at all, so a harder setting earns you nothing beyond the challenge itself.

Can I make puzzles easier without making combat easier?

Yes. Puzzle difficulty is a separate setting with a hinted option, independent of the three combat difficulties.

How many hits can I take?

On normal difficulty, two or three. Enemies also have grab attacks that punish hesitation.

What is the IV bag for?

At low health it lets you survive one otherwise fatal hit. It is tied to Simon being a patient and works as a single second chance.
