The organ box code at a glance

Guides give this puzzle a few names: the organ box, the organ transport box, the human organ transplant box, or simply the box puzzle in Zoe's house. They are all the same locked case with two three-digit combination locks, and the same code opens it.

The code and the steps below come from three independent guides written on the full game: PowerPyx, GamesRadar+ and VGC. All three give 956 on the left and 133 on the right. We have not played the puzzle ourselves.

Step 1: find the box in Zoe's kitchen

You reach Zoe's house at the start of Chapter 3, after escaping the hotel in A Different Place. The house is west of Town Square (5) on the Shorefront map, and the organ transport box is in the kitchen.

The box will not open yet, but the drawer to its left holds the Flashlight (No Batteries). Take it now: you need a working flashlight to restore the power.

Step 2: restore the power

Zoe's computer holds the rule for the code, and the house has no power. This is the longest part of the puzzle, so do it in this order.

1. 1Upstairs, take the AA Batteries from the drawer of a small cabinet in a room on the left. PowerPyx says the second room on the left; GamesRadar+ says the first room at the top of the stairs. Combine them with the flashlight.
2. 2Crouch into the crawlspace under the stairs. With the flashlight you can find the electricity meter and the Power Card Credit Guide beside it. According to GamesRadar+, checking the meter adds Peters Newsagent to your map.
3. 3Go to Peters Newsagent (2). GamesRadar+ notes that your first enemy is here and that the way in is the open door at the back. Take the Prepaid Power Card from the cash register.
4. 4Back at the meter, insert the card in the slot at the bottom of the display, press button A until the screen reads "Card Credit", press button B, then flip the main switch at the bottom right. GamesRadar+ adds that you can hold L1/LB to view the credit guide while you do this.

Step 3: read the middle email on Zoe's computer

With the power on, go to the computer in the corner of the living room, switch it on and refresh the inbox. There are three emails.

Open the middle one, "For Attending…". GamesRadar+ gives its full subject as "FW: For Attending SURG04GE_+ON". Most of the text is corrupted, but one line survives: set the code "using the first and last 3 digits of the corresponding ET code". GamesRadar+ also points to the reference "HFS-OPCS-Y015" at the end of the email as the other detail that matters.

The top and bottom emails, "Your Letter" and "Please Report In", are not needed for the box. They are still worth reading: they count towards the document trophies and towards the Discoveries total that helps decide your ending.

Step 4: pick up the Organ Transplant Card

The card is upstairs, on the floor of the bathroom, reached through the room on the right. You can grab it while you are upstairs for the batteries; it does not need the power.

GamesRadar+ calls it the Human Transplant Card; PowerPyx and VGC call it the Organ Transplant Card. It is covered in letters and numbers, and only one of them matters: the ET-No, the "ET code" the email refers to.

GamesRadar+ saw the relevant numbers highlighted in red. PowerPyx notes that the Hinted puzzle setting highlights important text in clues, so on the Normal puzzle setting the highlight may not be there. We have not confirmed how the card looks on Normal.

Step 5: turn the ET code into the box code

The ET code on the card is 956234692133, as VGC records it. Apply the email's rule to it:

1. 1The first three digits, 956, go on the left lock.
2. 2The last three digits, 133, go on the right lock.
3. 3The six digits in the middle, 234692, are not used.
4. 4When the game asks whether to open the box, choose "Yes". Zoe's Lanyard is added to your inventory automatically.

Right code, but the box will not open

If 956 and 133 are entered and nothing happens, the cause is almost always a missing step rather than a wrong number. These are the reasons the sources confirm:

• You have not picked up the clues. PowerPyx found that the game generally will not complete a puzzle until you have collected the clues that belong to it, even if you already know the answer. For this box, those are the Organ Transplant Card and the "For Attending…" email.
• The power is off or the email is unread. The email only appears after the power is restored and you have refreshed the inbox, so it cannot be skipped.
• You are replaying on New Game Plus. GamesRadar+ tried the known combination on a second, NG+ run and it did not work until the writer had gone through the steps again. It suspects this is because part of the chain doubles as the combat tutorial at the newsagent.
• The numbers are on the wrong sides. All three guides put 956 on the left and 133 on the right.

What is inside, and where to go next

The box holds Zoe's Lanyard; GamesRadar+ calls it Zoe's ID card. It is required, so take it when the game offers it. It has two uses in the rest of Part 1:
